Two years ago, as Victoria’s freshly-elected MP, I wrote to the Infrastructure minister with an important warning. Internal government documents showed that Ottawa planned to “re-examine” its priorities for cleaning up contaminated sites, jeopardizing the final phase of Victoria’s Rock Bay cleanup.
I knew how important it was to see this project through: not just because it was one of Canada’s most toxic sites, but because of the economic potential it has through a partnersh...ip of the Songhees and Esquimalt Nations.
After securing a guarantee of funding from Minister Lebel, the final phase moved ahead and we will see this enormous environmental cleanup project completed later this year.
I couldn’t agree more with Mayor Lisa Helps: “This area holds the key to the future of our city.”
