Town Hall: What does the end of home mail delivery mean for Oak Bay?

Canada Post's plan to eliminate home mail service--now being implemented in Victoria's V9A postal code--is coming soon to the rest of Victoria and Oak Bay.

I've raised concerns with Canada Post about how this change will impact seniors, people with disabilities, small businesses, and others. I've also met with the mayors of Victoria and Oak Bay to hear their concerns about its effects on parking, municipal budgets, and more.

Now, to share the latest news from Victoria and hear the questions and concerns of Oak Bay residents, I'm hosting a town hall at Oak Bay United Church on Thursday, July 2nd from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m.

We'll hear from Victoria Councillor Marianne Alto about the City's experience with Canada Post, and from Oak Bay Mayor Nils Jensen about the particular concerns of small municipalities and the challenges Canada Post's plan could create in established, heritage neighbourhoods.

All are welcome at this free and open event. Bring your questions!

For more information, contact my community office any time at 250-363-3600 or murray.rankin.c1@parl.gc.ca

Public Consultation on Bill C-51 with MPs Randall Garrison and Murray Rankin

What is in Stephen Harper's omnibus Bill C-51? Does it address the security threats we face? Could it undermine civil liberties and stifle lawful dissent and activism? And is there a better way forward to protect both security and freedoms?

Join an expert panel and public discussion hosted by Members of Parliament Randall Garrison and Murray Rankin.

Featured panelists:

Reg Whitaker is a distinguished academic and expert in constitutional law and privacy issues. The co-author of 'Secret Service: Political Policing in Canada', he has written extensively on issues of intelligence and state surveillance and advised government inquiries on terrorism-related cases.

Laurel Collins teaches at the University of Victoria and studies social movements and collective action. She will speak to the ‘chilling effect’ this bill could have on lawful dissent and activism in Canada.

Randall Garrison is the Opposition critic for Public Safety and a key figure in the debate in Parliament on Bill C-51. A former criminal justice instructor, he is now Vice Chair of the House of Commons’ Committee on Public Safety and National Security.
